Airplane Sketch9/23/2011 Airplane Sketch One long airplane flights you can usually watch movies, read, or listen to music. I'm always telling myself, I should sketch more so I bring a sketchbook with me on flights and start drawing whatever I see. When you are constantly moving in flight, I find it a challenge to draw. This is a drawing I did last year, shaky lines and all.

September 11, 2011 - Magnolia Petal9/11/2011 Hard to avoid thoughts of the 10th anniversary of 9/11. Life is a gift. How shall I spend this precious day?
Indian Springs Mineral Baths and Spa9/2/2011 Indian Springs Baths and Spa in Calistoga sits at the northern end of the Napa Valley. Most visitors to the Napa Valley only venture as far north as St. Helena leaving Calistoga about 15 minutes north relatively un-gentrified. Calistoga still retains the feeling of a small town. Its claim to fame is not so much the world class vineyards up and down the valley, but the natural mineral hot springs that Bay Area locals have for generations gone to "take the waters."
The place looks as though it could be a set for a 1940's era movie. When updated, the designers took care to provide modern conveniences and sensibilities but yet prevented them from intruding upon this fantasy. Very carefully maintained, the spaces and grounds are spotless. My favorite is the olympic sized swimming pool with naturally heated mineral spring water. Although huge, it seems to lend itself more to lazy lounging and sipping cold lime water while cultivating one's tan. Special rates are available during the winter months, where a room tariff includes having hot mud shoveled over your naked body - an experience long remembered. Winter is Coming - Scarf Season Ahead8/25/2011 Although the heat of summer is still baking most of the country, San Francisco is an exception. In San Francisco, you can wear a sweater almost any day of the year. Still, winter is coming and like all of nature, we start preparing for cold weather. Chris bought some yarn at Atelier Yarns on Divisidero Street and has started to knit a scarf of rich harmonizing colors. See above. Some lucky person will be looking very dapper this December.
Mexican Chairs8/13/2011 Mando's Mexican Restaurant in downtown Pacific Grove (near Monterey, CA) has these rustic sturdy chairs that are surprisingly comfortable. Assembled from tree branches, the joints were very tight and there was no woobbling. Clearly no two are alike. It's a nice addition to an otherwise perfunctory space.
Richard Nixon is perhaps the most controversial 20th Century political figure in American history and his flawed "reign" seems to herald the modern era of deep distrust of leadership. This silk screen poster on cardboard was used in an anti-Vietnam war demonstration and is a brilliant example of political commentary. Its prescient commentary, draftsmanship and composition are superb. My compliments to its unknown creator.
Almost 40 years later, just change the person and it still seems relevant, when pulling strings behind the scenes affects the destiny of millions. Father's Day 20116/19/2011 Happy Father's Day to our fathers who we hold dear in our hearts and to our children who say the word, "DAD!"
Not Now Later5/12/2011 I parked in the North Beach Garage recently at 735 Vallejo Street near Stockton. My favorite garage in the City. The garage is pretty new and clean - better than most. There's a slit of an opening to the sky where they planted some bamboo. A little relief in the concrete jungle. Each stall has a slogan like a fortune cookie and you have the chance to pick one yourself. I just parked in the first one available and read this when I got out. At first I liked it alot, but then I thought about it - hmm may not so good. Like many things we want in life, they are always ahead of us so I guess there's something to look forward to.
