Homage to Edward Hopper8/8/2011 Detail from Edward Hopper's NightHawks I snapped this photo at Bar Jules and when I looked at it, I thought of a Edward Hopper painting of people staring vacantly in a restaurant. These two people are at separate tables and both seem lost in thought in their own worlds. In my mind, the person inside looks out at a light that shines on a world that he wishes he could be part of (actually I cropped the other person out of the photo - but that wouldn't be as interesting).

Pine Street Remodel Update8/8/2011 Update on the remodeling of the Pine Street bathroom: The old tub, ceramic tile, cabinet, sink, and flooring have been removed. Demolition is about complete. New fixtures and tile have been delivered and is being stored in the garage. We have decided to raise the sill height on the window to avoid interfering with the counter.
Balboa Theater to go Dark8/6/2011 Just as I'm thinking about how the Balboa Theater enlives a small section of fog shrouded Balboa Street in the Outer Richment, I read that the Balboa Theater will close this October 2011. There's still time for one last visit before one more neon light goes dark.
Poesia Restaurant - Grilled Calamari8/5/2011 Grilled Calamari - Poesia Restaurant, San Francisco Poesia Restaurant in the Castro is located on the second floor of a former house. Although comfortable, the conversion of the house to a restaurant seemed incomplete as it didn't have the charm and cozy feeling of being in someone's home and yet it didn't have the polish of a sophistication restaurant either. The food, however, was the best part of the experience. Dinner here was a gift from Alex. Thanks Alex.

Asilomar - Julia Morgan Architect8/4/2011 Julia Morgan - Architect Asilomar was designed by Bay Area architect Julia Morgan as a retreat for the YMCA in the 1920's. She also designed Hearst Castle for William Randolph Hearst at San Simeon. While Hearst Castle was grand in every aspect, Asilomar was modest in both scale and materials making use of native redwood, stone, and shingles. Located next to Asilomar Beach in Pacific Grove, the perfume of fresh sea air and pine trees permeate the grounds. The sands near the beach are wheelchair accessible and make for a great walk. Now Asilomar is owned and operated by the State of California as part of its State Park system. Modest rooms start at under $150 a night with no TV, telephone, or other distractions. It is primarily used as a conference center, although individual rooms are also available. Highly recommended. New Bohemia Signs - Handmade8/3/2011 Bohemia Signs just moved from the corner of Harrison and 11th Streets to 9th Street near Folsom. Whenever I walk by I look into the shop hoping to see someone hand painting a sign. In a age when almost everything is done digitally, it's nice to see someone still cultivating their "hand".
They also do gold leaf lettering on glass and other things. Check out their website here. The Oval Table8/2/2011 A dinner with the family about 10 years ago while on vacation in Carmel was especially memorable because of this table. There were 6 of us gathered around this table, and we could see and talk to each other easily. The warm light above the table (reflected on the table top in the photo) was like a fireplace and the oval table gathered us together into a communal hug. After all these years I still remember this table. Visiting this restaurant again after ten years, I immediately looked for the table. It was still there in the same spot. We sat near it. After a while another family sat down at "our" table and had their own special dinner.
Shapes and forms do affect us. Toast Eatery at the corner of Polk Street and Sacramento Streets has an updated American diner look. Right at the #1 California Bus Stop and along busy Polk Street, you would think it would be a hit. It replaces Bob's Boiler, another diner that was at this location for as long as I can remember. Bob's Boiler had run its course and it had no energy and I hadn't tried it in years. Enter Toast Eatery. Coffee was good, buttermilk pancakes looked great, but tasted very average. Katie's hash browns looked average, but she said they tasted great. Toast Eatery on Polk Street - San Francisco The image of the entry on their website is really inviting. I think the appearance seems to promise a bit more than they deliver. Check out their website by clicking the photo to the left. I'd go back and give it another try. AuthorCatagories
