Free music concerts can be great, but also really a hassle. It can be a day-long commitment with traffic, parking, and crowd issues. The annual Fillmore jazz Festival, on the other hand is really convenient. I have a renewed interest in jazz so I wanted to go. It's just a short walking distance from my home and I checked it out last Saturday. The festival is a giant party for a 10 block length of Fillmore stretching from Jackson Street south to Eddy Street. There were three main stages for music, but also many smaller performances on the sidewalks. There seemed to be plenty of people listening to jazz this last weekend. Maybe jazz has a future and the new Yoshi's Jazz Club and the Fillmore Jazz District is becoming the new hot spot! The Fillmore has a great tradition and history in 20th Century jazz. All the great jazz performers flocked to the Fillmore when they played San Francisco. See this description for a history of Fillmore jazz. And there was dancing in the Street!

The Department of Public Health at 101 Grove Street is across the street from City Hall at the Civic Center. A sturdy bronze handrail with a curved support bracket is attached to the granite exterior at the entry steps.
Happy Birthday May Mock7/4/2011 May Mock is 91 years old today! Happy Birthday. This picture was taken in Hong Kong in 1937. What a different world that was.
I recently blogged and included a recipe for Kimchi, a dish found in almost every Korean meal. I mentioned several uses for aging kimchi and one is kimchi fried rice.
If you like your fried rice spicy, then use the kimchi straight. If you want a mild version, rinse the kimchi with water before using. This is the ultimate emergency meal when you don't have anything else in the frig. See my recipe here. Eve Lounge Poster - 1960's Redux7/2/2011 Perhaps it's in the air, but I saw this poster on the left on-line for Eve Lounge that is a perfect re-interpretation of the 1960's counter culture rock posters. We've been talking about 1960's retro design at Pine Street lately and have tried our hand at designing something in that vein. The poster above on the right is something I found in the garage from my 1960's school days. The letters are formed to take an object's shape and legibility is secondary. If the poster itself is compelling, then it encourages you to study it deeper to read the message. At the left is Chris' design for a T shirt. Dry Fried Chicken Many restaurants serve a version of dry fried chicken. I first had it in a Mission Street Chinese restaurant where it was called "Korean Chicken". The definitive version currently is at the Shanghai House. Shanghai Dumpling House Shanghai House in the Outer Richmond at 3641 Balboa sits opposite the Balboa Theater. The sleek glass and chrome facade belies the folksy slow service inside. The wait, however, is worth it. Service may take awhile because there is only one server and she moves to her own rhythm. They specialize in steamed dumplings called "xiao long bao". Ten in an order, everybody seems to order them as well as the dry fried chicken wings. The chicken wings aren't on the menu, but everybody seems to know about them and want them. These are big juicy chicken wings with a battered crispy skin that's hefty enough to carry the spicy sweet and sour sauce. Order the dumplings and chicken wings and then try out a couple of other things and you've got a great dinner. AuthorCatagories
