Blue Bottle Cafe, Linden Street, San Francisco There are two examples I've seen of garage storefront architecture lately. This Blue Bottle Cafe is on Linden Street in Hayes Valley, San Francisco. The other one is Vega Cafe on Folsom Street in San Francisco's SOMA. This one is beautifully designed and engages the street with texture, color, planting -- all the way to the corner. Notice the overhead door is built of translucent panels that overhand the sidewalk and provides shelter from the rain for customers. Its important here as the service bar is fairly close to the sidewalk. Greaat coffee AND a spatial delight. A hidden treasure, indeed.
The Elusive French Cafe.4/11/2011 August 2008 on vacation in Paris and we were walking the side streets near the Paris Opera House and happened on the Cafe Dalayrac at 2, Rue Dalayrac 75002 Paris. Walking into the cafe to get a seat, I saw a beautiful tart tartin smiling at me. I found lunch! Cafe Le Dalayrac, Paris I had a memorable meal, a beautiful composed salad, coffee and the tart tartin. Last fall 2010 Chris and I tried to find it again, but I couldn't remember the street. We finally gave up. Now that I've figured out where it is, I hope I will be able to go again. Ice Cream - I love Paris4/11/2011 Tuileries Garden - Paris August 15, 2008 - I told my daughter, I wanted to be the first man to take her to Paris. Well I did it and not a moment too soon as she was 16 years old. Strolling the Tuileries Gardens on a warm August day, we came upon this ice cream stand. Walking around to the shade to sit and enjoy the ice cream, I saw this shot. I don't remember how good the ice cream was, but I remember the moment. I liked the framed views and the repeating rectangles. Malasada Safari - Star Noodle - Lahaina4/11/2011 Malasada safari - In search of fried dough - January 23, 2011, Sunday afternoon. We decided to try Star Noodle outside of Lahaina, Maui. Star Noodle Malasadas I wanted to try Star Noodle because I saw reviews that showed pork buns similar to those made by David Chang in New York. They were good, but they had MALASADAS! When you're on safari, you never know what you will come across and you have to be ready to pounce at a moments notice. These were Star Noodles take on malasadas with a granulated sugar coating and long toothpicks for delicate eating. Left photo - Beignets with ice cream Cafe Rouge, right photo - malasadas from Maui Cream filled donuts, beignets, malasadas, and bombolinis are all variations of the same idea - sweet dough usually with a creme filling, fried to a golden brown. Slightly crunchy, soft, warm and yielding with treasure in the middle. Ooooh what's not to like. The beignets on the left are from Cafe Rouge in Berkeley. The malasadas on the right are from the Home Maid Bakery on Maui (I'll take a dozen!). Someone in the AM Family loves 'um.
Blue Bottle4/8/2011 Friday What's your favorite Blue Bottle coffee? I haven't found one I don't like yet. Out of coffee beans so I headed down to Folsom Street. Luck was with me again as I scored the last bag of beans. YoYo's the Man4/7/2011 YoYo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble played at Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco's Civic Center. I do mean played. Incredible music and the crowd demanded two encores. The ensemble really loved playing together as the second encore was a spontaneous jam. Absolutely nothing beats a live performance. Through the lobby windows we could see the Beaux Arts City Hall by Bakewell Brown. Thank you Chris. Didjeridoo4/6/2011 Oscher, my didjerido instructor Wednesday April 6, 2011 I bought a didjeridoo on-line about 3 years ago and after a short attempt, it just sat in the house. I found a one evening didjeridoo workshop in the Mission District near our old house -- so I signed up. I thought a group setting would make it easier. LUCKY ME! I was the only student that showed up so I got a LOT of ATTENTION. An hour later and a little light-headed, my instructor Osher sent me off with hints on circular breathing. So I'm off to the car, didjeridoo in tow, wind blowing from the northeast trying to remember what Osher showed me. Julia Morgan Ballroom4/6/2011 AuthorCatagories
